Sutherland lies on a plateau 1550 meters above sea level making it one of the coldest towns in South Africa. It also houses the Sutherland observatory currently busy with installing 10 metre diameter telescope, making it the largest in the Southern hemisphere. New Zealand, Poland, Great Britian,Germany, America and South Africa all contributed money towards this project making them joint owners. It is called the S A L T project. (Southern African Large Telescope) An infrared telescope and camera developed by South Africa and Japanese scientists will enable them to photograph stars never officially seen before. The data will help scientists better understand how stars were formed. It will also help to get a better view of earth`s own galaxy.

Sutherland is also recident to 48 butterfly species of which 8 are found nowhere else in the world. The riverine rabbit, South Africa`s most endangered mammal is also found in this area and nowhere else in the world. In addition to the above, the town, with its clear blue skies and no pollution, simply grows on you.
